Aussie-Observations: Day-5

Round 2 (cont’d)

Marcos Baghdatis vs Juan Martin Del Potro
Baghdatis! Gettin’ er’ done! 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.  Finished off the big man with an ace down the T.  I love watching the Bag-Man play, he leaves nothing on the table!

Next up: Jurgen Melzer in Round #3

Round #2 Men’s Singles (results) — Round #2 Women’s Singles (Draws & Results)

Round #3

Round #3 Men’s Singles (Draws) — Round #3 Women’s Singles (Draws)

Roddick vs Robin Haase
Roddick is having to work hard again. Dropped the first set 2-6. Looks out of sorts.  Finally rights the ship (mostly) in the 2nd set, and wins the tiebreaker 7-2.  Keeps his foot on the gas and wins the 3rd set 6-2.  Looks to have regained the advantage, and is running downhill at this point.  Finally closes out the 4th set 6-2, having had to work too hard to win for a 3rd match in a row.

Henin vs Kuznetsova
Kuzie get’s the break in the 7th game of the first set, and holds the break ’til the end of the set: 6-4.  Back and forth play in the 2nd set leads to a tiebreaker.  I don’t think I’m going too far by saying this 2nd set tiebreaker is the ugliest tiebreaker I’ve ever seen.  And no sooner do I type that than they play the point-of-match on the 14th point of the tiebreaker.  At 7-7, Justine dumps another forehand in the net.  I hope she can take this to a 3rd set, but frankly – the way she’s playing – she deserves to lose this match.  And then after a gutsy forehand, she double-faults again, giving Kuzie match point on her serve.  Kuzie doesn’t blink at this one, and wins the match in straight-sets.  Justine’s forehand has left the building…

Na Li (Li, Na…whatever) vs Barbora Zahlavova Strycova
Don’t look now, but guess who’s making another good run down under this year? Yep, Na Li put a beatdown on Barbarella 6-2, 6-1. How can you not be happy for a girl with a smile this big?

Dead Spot on Hisense Arena?
Who knew an air bubble under the court could cause a dead-spot like that. Weird.

Federer vs Malisse
Fed races to a 4-0 lead and then starts to appear bored. Loses focus, and plays two sloppy games in a row. Malisse didn’t win those games, Federer just lost them. Watching him play Malisse is like watching a high-performance race-car pulling a hay-wagon in the parade. It looks like he’s just struggling to stay interested. Could he actually be practicing things out there? And Malisse, even with Federer giving him several points, still has that “Dead Man Walking”, head-hung-low, “Aw, what’s the point?” sort of air about him.  Finally, in the 8th game, Malisse actually earns a game while serving.  But it’s too little, too late for the 1st set, and Fed closes it 6-3.

2nd set: Fed still doesn’t look like he’s playing anywhere near close to his potential, and yet he takes the 2nd set 6-3.  If I heard DC correctly, his record now when winning the first two sets is 167-0.

Maria Sharapova vs Julia Goerges
Gorgeous takes the 1st set 6-4! What a nice surprise! I’m not rooting against Sharapova, but it’s hard not to root for the underdog.  Shaza gets the first break of the 2nd set, and is serving at 3-2.  Once again, I’ll have to read about the outcome in the morning.

Tomas Berdych vs Richard Gasquet
The big Czech (Thomas is 6’5″) wins 6-2, 7-6, 6-2. Solid play. Berdych is just an all-around solid player.
