Wimbledon Predictions | ATP, Round #1

During the French Open the folks at Tencap kept track of their predictions for each round during the tournament.  Here are the results:

  • 80% of the 1st round
  • 81.5% of the second
  • 87.5% of the third
  • 87.5% of the fourth
  • 100% of the fifth
  • 50% of the final four
  • Correctly predicted the winner of Federer/Nadal*

Total Correct Matches: 104/127 = 81% average for tournament (compared to 74% based solely off ATP rankings)

Note: While it can be argued that correctly predicting the outcome of any Federer/Nadal match – to say nothing of a Federer/Nadal match on clay – is not particularly impressive, I submit that correctly picking 80+ % of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth rounds is noteworthy.  Being able to predict the winner for 81% of the matches during the entire tournament is statistically significant.

But hindsight is 20/20, and if I were a skeptical reader – and I am – I’d probably think, “Hey, that’s cool and everything, but how about making some “predictions” before the tournament starts?”

Fair enough.
